MICHIGAN CITY, Indiana — A northern Indiana man who pleaded guilty to criminal charges in the shooting death of his girlfriend's 3-year-old son has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.
A LaPorte County judge also ordered 25-year-old Zachariah Grisham of Michigan City on Thursday to serve eight years on probation following his release from prison.
The LaPorte County Herald-Argus reports (http://bit.ly/1FbumTT ) Grisham pleaded guilty to neglect of a dependent resulting in death for Lance Wilson's September 2013 fatal shooting.
Initial reports said the boy's death stemmed from a gun game he and Grisham were playing.
But during Grisham's sentencing hearing, both he and his girlfriend testified that the child suffered a fatal gunshot when the weapon discharged accidentally as Grisham tried to retrieve it after the boy removed if from the adults' bedroom.
