Indiana man gets 12-year sentence after pleading guilty in fatal shooting of 3-year-old boy

MICHIGAN CITY, Indiana — A northern Indiana man who pleaded guilty to criminal charges in the shooting death of his girlfriend's 3-year-old son has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.

A LaPorte County judge also ordered 25-year-old Zachariah Grisham of Michigan City on Thursday to serve eight years on probation following his release from prison.

The LaPorte County Herald-Argus reports ( ) Grisham pleaded guilty to neglect of a dependent resulting in death for Lance Wilson's September 2013 fatal shooting.

Initial reports said the boy's death stemmed from a gun game he and Grisham were playing.

But during Grisham's sentencing hearing, both he and his girlfriend testified that the child suffered a fatal gunshot when the weapon discharged accidentally as Grisham tried to retrieve it after the boy removed if from the adults' bedroom.
