CLARKSVILLE, Tennessee — A fire official says a 14-year-old boy remains in critical condition at a hospital the day after two other children died in an accidental fire in Clarksville.

Clarksville Assistant Fire Chief Ray Williams said Wednesday that Joshua Phillips is being treated at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Williams said the boy is alert and opening his eyes.

Phillips was taken to the hospital after a fire early Tuesday morning tore through a 65-year-old home in Clarksville. Williams says two other children, 9-year-old Travis Howard Jr. and 11-year-old Ann Howard, died in the fire.

Williams said three adults, including the children's' parents and a family friend, were able to escape the blaze.

Williams said an investigation shows the fire was an accident, and its likely cause was an electrical problem.
