CLAREMONT, North Carolina — The Catawba County Sheriff's Office says a Claremont homeowner has shot and killed an intruder at his home.

Sheriff Coy Reid told area media outlets that two men broke into the home through a basement window at the rear of the home on Tuesday.

Reid said the suspect went down a hallway and charged toward the homeowner, who fired his 12-gauge shotgun and hit the suspect in the chest. The sheriff said the second suspect ran down the basement stairs and left in a dark blue minivan. That suspect was still at large Monday afternoon.

The sheriff said the shooting looks like a case of self-defense.
