PARIS — Lille missed the chance to leapfrog Marseille at the top of the French league after failing to break Montpellier's defense in a goalless draw on Sunday.
Lille was the more dangerous side but could not find the target as Montpellier, sitting back in its own half, kept the hosts at bay.
Marseille's 3-0 win against Rennes on Saturday put it level on points with Bordeaux but with a better goal difference after six rounds. Lille is in third place, one point behind.
Still unbeaten this season along with Lille, title holder Paris Saint-Germain is hosting seven-time champion Lyon later Sunday in the first high-profile match of the season. Also, Saint-Etienne travels to Lens and Monaco hosts Guingamp.
