Morristown judge reduces 20-year sentence for driver in crash that killed 3 people

MORRISTOWN, New Jersey — A northern New Jersey judge has reduced the prison sentence he imposed on a man who drove drunk and caused a fatal car crash in 2013.

Luis Torres was sentenced to 20 years in prison on June 26 in Morristown, months after pleading guilty to aggravated manslaughter, driving while intoxicated and other charges.

Authorities said the 39-year-old Torres was driving home from a barbecue when his sport utility vehicle overturned in Jefferson Township in August 2013. The crash killed three people, including Torres' 11-year-old stepdaughter.

The Daily Record reports (http://dailyre.co/1jfL8v1 ) a judge decided to amend the 20-year sentence to 15 years on Sept. 21 after he was "emotionally swayed" by victims' statements during sentencing.

The new sentence still requires that 85 percent be served before parole consideration.
