FAYETTEVILLE, North Carolina — South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory gave U.S. Senate candidate Thom Tillis a boost during a campaign event In Fayetteville.

Haley told a crowd of about 200 people Thursday night that Tillis is the only person she's leaving South Carolina for to make campaign appearances, The Fayetteville Observer (http://bit.ly/1qik36h ) reported. Haley is seeking re-election.

Haley urged the crowd to help Tillis beat Democratic incumbent Kay Hagan.

She said people should talk to people "and say I'm supporting Thom Tillis because I know he will represent America. I know he will make us strong again."

McCrory said Tillis is a problem solver.

"He's smart. He's intelligent, and he's a go-getter. And that's exactly what we need in Washington, D.C.," McCrory told the group.

Tillis said as recently as early 2013 he had not planned to run for the Senate, planning instead to leave office at the end of his current term in the North Carolina House and return to the private sector.

"But I started looking at what this president and Kay Hagan have done to this great nation and decided that we had to have somebody who'd step up and help make America great again," Tillis said.
