SUNDERLAND, England — Jordi Gomez converted two penalties to boost Sunderland's chances of avoiding relegation with a 2-1 win over 10-man Southampton on Saturday in the Premier League.

Gomez put the hosts ahead in the 21st minute after Billy Jones was fouled by Jose Fonte in the area, but Sadio Mane equalized just two minutes later for Southampton. Sunderland goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon rushed out to collect a ball into the area only to spill it into the path of Mane, who calmly slotted it into the net.

But Jamie Ward-Prowse earned a straight red card in the 54th for taking down Jermain Defoe in the area and Gomez slotted in his second spot kick to secure the win.

Sunderland remained in 18th place, a point behind Leicester and Hull. Southampton's European chances took a blow as the club stayed seventh.
