PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island — The city of Providence will hold its annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony a day early because of weather.

The city says it will light the tree on Friday at 6 p.m. at the downtown ice rink, the Alex and Ani City Center, instead of Saturday. It is expected to rain Saturday night.

The event is free and open to the public. It will include performances by the Brown University Band, local choruses and figure skaters.

Mayor Angel Taveras and WJAR-TV journalist Barbara Morse Silva will light the tree.

The city's arts and recreation departments organized the ceremony.
