TEMPE, Arizona — A Tempe police officer who was stabbed after responding to a domestic-violence call at an apartment complex is recovering in a hospital.
Police on Wednesday identified the officer as Julie Werhnyak, a 16-year department veteran.
They say she is in stable condition.
Werhnyak issued a statement saying she is doing well but has a lot of recovery time ahead of her.
Police say 26-year-old Matthew A. Metz was fatally shot by officers in the altercation Tuesday afternoon.
They say an unidentified woman was injured, but is in in stable condition and expected to recover.
Officers arrived at the front door of the residence, heard screaming and made an emergency entry to assist the female victim.
They say Metz then stabbed Werhnyak before being shot multiple times by other officers.
