NEWARK, New Jersey — An Essex County jury has convicted a man of killing a former Orange High School football star.

The panel deliberated for about a day and a half before convicting 22-year-old Mark Lovett of aggravated manslaughter in the death of 19-year-old Malcom Bagley.

The Orange resident also was convicted Tuesday of aggravated assault and weapons offenses, but was acquitted of murder and murder conspiracy.

Lovett faces up to 35 years in prison when he's sentenced in September.

Prosecutors said Bagley, a former captain of Orange High's football team, was an innocent bystander in the May 2012 shooting. He had just finished his freshman year at Dean College in Massachusetts.

East Orange resident Shawn Watford, who allegedly drove the car used in the shooting, awaits trial.
