Guillermo headed toward Hawaiian islands in Pacific, decrease in forward speed expected

MIAMI — Hurricane Guillermo continues to race west and is expected to begin slowing down deep in the Pacific.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami says Guillermo is about 1,145 miles (1,845 kilometers) east-southeast of Hilo, Hawaii. The Category 2 hurricane had maximum sustained winds near 105 mph (165 kph).

The center says Guillermo hasn't strengthened, with a turn to the west-northwest with a decrease in forward speed expected later on Saturday. A gradual weakening should begin Sunday.

It is moving west at 14 mph (22 kph).
