SCRANTON, Pennsylvania — A northeastern Pennsylvania man has pleaded guilty to third-degree murder in the beating death of his girlfriend' 10-month-old son last year.
Twenty-four-year-old Eddie Widdick entered the plea Wednesday in Lackawanna County Court in the March 2014 death of Silas Sorak. All other counts were dropped in exchange for the plea.
The (Scranton) Times-Tribune (http://bit.ly/1EWEA9b ) reports that prosecutors have agreed to recommend a sentence of 12 to 25 years in prison.
Widdick was originally charged with first-degree murder, and District Attorney Andrew Jarbola said in October that he planned to seek the death penalty.
Authorities said Widdick called his girlfriend to say the child was having difficulty breathing but later said he dropped Sorak down a flight of steps and forcefully put him into a crib.
