LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas — A man acquitted of killing his girlfriend in Russellville is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to reverse the dismissal of his lawsuit against local police.

Kevin Jones contends police conspired to implicate him in the 2005 stabbing and beating death of beauty queen Nona Dirksmeyer.

A jury in 2007 acquitted Jones of murder in the case. Another man was later charged with murder — but that charge was dismissed after two trials ended with deadlocked juries.

Jones' lawsuit — filed in 2011 — was dismissed by a federal judge who said the statute of limitations had expired. The 8th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the ruling.

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports ( ) that Friday's petition by attorney Charles Sidney Gibson contends the alleged conspiracy was discovered only after the statute had passed.
