Orange County sheriff's deputy kills man during confrontation near Camp Pendleton

CAMP PENDLETON, California — An Orange County sheriff's deputy has shot and killed a man during a standoff near the Camp Pendleton Marine base.

Authorities say deputies stopped a car Tuesday afternoon off of Interstate 5.

Lt. Jeff Hallock tells the Orange County Register (http://bit.ly/1DrwGcs ) that deputies wanted to talk to the driver but he refused to leave the car and claimed to have a gun.

Hallock says there was a 30-minute standoff before a deputy shot the man.

Details of what prompted the shooting haven't been released.
