NEW YORK — A man who choked his daughter's great-grandmother to death in her New York City apartment and took her purse and TV has been sentenced to 20 years to life in prison.

Gregory Velez was sentenced Tuesday. He pleaded guilty in in July to murdering 73-year-old Julia Hernandez three years ago.

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. says the 38-year-old Velez "attacked and killed a person who showed him only trust and kindness."

Velez' lawyer has said his client is remorseful.

Hernandez was found dead in her East Harlem apartment in October 2011, with her face covered with plastic. Prosecutors say that her apartment had been ransacked.

Her granddaughter is the mother of Velez' school-age daughter.
