Driver plows through freeway off-ramp in San Francisco, fatally strikes sleeping homeless man

SAN FRANCISCO — The California Highway Patrol says a homeless man sleeping under a San Francisco freeway was struck and killed by an SUV that drove through an off-ramp guardrail.

Television station KTVU reports ( ) that the SUV's 27-year-old driver was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence and vehicular manslaughter.

The CHP tells KTVU that the accident happened on 1-80 at Fifth Street early Sunday when the driver lost control while trying to navigate a curve in the off-ramp, drove through the guardrail and plowed into a homeless encampment under the freeway.

The CHP has not identified the man who was struck. Witnesses told KTVU he was in his 60s and had been staying at the encampment for several weeks.

His pillow, baseball cap and books were scattered across the crash site.
