Fontana police shoot, kill robbery suspect they say advanced with a knife

FONTANA, California — Fontana police have shot and killed a robbery suspect they say came at them with a knife.

Police went to a Chevron gas station around 4:15 a.m. Sunday after the clerk called 911 to report a robbery in progress in front of the store.

A police statement says arriving officers spotted a man with a knife in one hand and a large rock in the other but he retreated inside.

Concerned for the clerk's safety, officers followed. Officers say they tried to talk the man into surrendering but shot him when he advanced on them.

The man, who was 47, died at the scene. His name hasn't been released.
