EUFAULA, Oklahoma — Federal transportation officials say the pilot of a medical helicopter killed last month was trying to turn the aircraft around before crashing in eastern Oklahoma.

The National Transportation Safety Board on Tuesday released its preliminary investigation into the March 12 crash near Eufaula that killed Matt Matthews and injured two crew members. The report confirms details released by investigator Tom Latson to the McAlester News-Capital last month.

The report says Matthews told the EagleMed crew that the clouds were lower than expected. They were returning to McAlester Regional Airport after dropping of a teen critically injured in a car accident at a Tulsa hospital.

The helicopter crashed into trees and rocky terrain after Matthews attempted to turn back toward Tulsa.
