JACKSONVILLE, Florida — Authorities say a 5-year-old girl drowned in a retention pond near a home she was visiting with her parents.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office responded to the Westside neighborhood Sunday night after the child was reported missing.

First Coast News ( ) reports the girl was playing outside with a group of children. When they returned to the home, the child wasn't with them.

Sgt. Jay Farhat says the parents became concerned, called 911 and started searching for her.

Someone found the child floating in the pond about the time officers arrived. They began CPR and she was taken to the hospital.

The girl's name hasn't been released.

Farhat says it appears to be a tragic accident, but the Department of Children and Families and police will investigate.
