Coomes rushes for 243 yards, 4 TDs as Phillipsburg beats Troy 30-29 for Class 2-1A title


HAYS, Kansas — Sophomore running back Kirk Coomes rushed for 243 yards and four touchdowns as Phillipsburg beat Troy 30-29 for the Class 2-1A football championship on Saturday.

Coomes scored on 7-, 54-, 62- and 4-yard runs for the Phillipsburg Panthers (11-2).

The Troy Trojans (10-2) were up 17-16 at the half. Quarterback Reid Greaser led Troy with 298 yards passing and four touchdowns. He scored on throws of 45-, 56- and 3- yards before hitting on a 30-yard pass that brought the Trojans within a point with 3:17 remaining.
