BECKLEY, West Virginia — A Stanaford man convicted of killing his stepfather will spend the rest of his life in prison.

A Raleigh County jury found Donald Gray Dunn Jr. guilty of first-degree murder in August. Dunn also was convicted of trying to kill his mother.

Media outlets report that Circuit Court Judge John A. Hutchison sentenced Dunn to life in prison without the possibility of parole on Friday. Dunn also received a three-to-15 year sentence for attempted first-degree murder.

Police say Dunn fatally shot 47-year-old Mark McDermott in May 2013. Dunn's mother, Johanna McDermott, escaped injury when Dunn's pistol misfired.
