HUTTO, Texas — An Austin-area police detective is dead and a suspect is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after the officer was run over by a police vehicle during a traffic stop.

Dead is Hutto police Sgt. Christopher Kelley. Booked into the Williamson County Jail without bond is 26-year-old Colby Ray Williamson of Austin.

A statement from The Texas Department of Public Safety says the incident happened about 10 a.m. Wednesday after officers chased Williamson on foot. Kelley caught up to him and a struggle ensued. Williamson gained control of a Hutto Police Department vehicle and ran over Kelley before speeding away.

Hutto police have asked the Texas Rangers to lead the investigation. The police department and Rangers say no further information is available.
