PHILLIPSBURG, New Jersey — Prosecutors say three police officers have been cleared of any wrongdoing in the fatal shooting of a knife-wielding man late last year.

Warren County Prosecutor Richard Burke announced Tuesday that a review of the Nov. 17 shooting of 36-year-old Thomas Read Jr. determined that the Phillipsburg officers — John Maczko, Louis DeLuca and John Franceschino — were justified in using deadly force.

The shooting occurred when the officers went to a Phillipsburg home to investigate reports that someone had sent threatening messages to another person. When the officers arrived they encountered Read, who authorities say was wielding a knife "in a threatening manner" and refusing to leave the residence.

Read was shot after he refused to comply with police orders to drop the knife. He died the next day.
