BEAUFORT, South Carolina — Authorities are investigating after a woman was found dead by firefighters putting out a blaze on the other end of her Beaufort County home.
Burton Fire District Chief Harry Rountree said firefighters were called to the home around 5 a.m. Sunday.
Roundtree says they found a small fire on one end of the home, and an unconscious woman in a bedroom on the other end of the house. The woman died at the hospital.
Deputies and the State Law Enforcement Division and investigating the fire and the woman's death.
The coroner's office plans an autopsy to determine how the woman died.
A cause for the fire has not been determined.
Roundtree says several of the woman's pets also died in the fire.
