Norfolk Southern railroad will release its fourth-quarter earnings Wednesday morning

OMAHA, Nebraska — Norfolk Southern railroad will release its fourth-quarter earnings report Wednesday morning.

Other major freight railroads struggled with fewer shipments and reduced fuel surcharge revenue during the quarter, so Norfolk Southern's results might disappoint if they deliver similar results.

The analysts surveyed by FactSet are expecting Norfolk Southern to report earnings per share of $1.26 on revenue of $2.57 billion on average.

Investors will also be looking for updates on Canadian Pacific's roughly $30 billion offer to buy Norfolk Southern.

Canadian Pacific hasn't made any major announcements about the deal since Norfolk Southern rejected its latest offer as "grossly inadequate" last month.

Norfolk Southern Corp. is based in Norfolk, Virginia, and it operates 20,000 miles of track in 22 eastern states and the District of Columbia.
