GREENWOOD, Mississippi — The Greenwood School District will lay off 25 assistant teachers and three other district employees.
School district spokeswoman Margaret Dean tells The Greenwood Commonwealth (http://bit.ly/1GBw3gW) in an email that the positions were eliminated as a costsaving measure because of a lack of state and local funds.
The layoffs of the assistant teachers were approved by the school board at a specially called board meeting April 2. A clerk's position, a district warehouse job and a custodial position with the district are also being eliminated.
School district officials have not provided additional details about the layoffs, including when they will take effect, which district schools would be affected or how many assistant teachers would remain with the district.
The school board meets Tuesday.
