JACKSONVILLE, North Carolina — Authorities say two men have been taken to the hospital after they tried to strike a police officer with their car during a chase.

Jacksonville Police told local media outlets that an officer from Camp Lejeune officer tried to stop the men around 10 p.m. Wednesday and called on other officers after the vehicle got away.

Investigators say the car sped toward a Jacksonville officer who started firing. The car crashed and the two men were taken to the hospital. Authorities haven't said whether the men were injured by the gunfire or the crash.

Police say they expect to charge the men if they recover. Their names have not been released.

Investigators also didn't say why the Camp Lejeune officer was trying to pull other the men.
