ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico — An Albuquerque officer accidentally shot by a superior during a low-level drug bust may sue the Albuquerque Police Department.

An attorney for officer Jacob Grant said in a letter sent the city in March that Grant was shot multiple times "at point blank range" by Lt. Greg Brachle, a detective who knew Grant well.

Lawyer Alex Gabaldon says in the letter that the suspects in the bust did not pose a threat but Brachle unnecessarily opened fire, striking Grant in January.

Gabaldon says Grant and his family want an undisclosed settlement or they will file a lawsuit against the city.

Albuquerque police said in a statement that Grant's claims are under review by the city's legal department.
