Man sentenced to 18 years in prison in fatal Northern California crossbow attack

EUREKA, California — A Northern California man has been sentenced to 18 years and four months in prison after pleading guilty in connection with a crossbow attack that left one person dead and another wounded.

The Times-Standard of Eureka reports ( that 21-year-old Phoenix Triton King entered the plea last week to voluntary manslaughter and attempted murder as part of a deal with Humboldt County prosecutors.

Authorities say he shot and killed 44-year-old James James and wounded 41-year-old Matthew Lewis during a confrontation on Sept. 8. King and his 16-year-old girlfriend had hitchhiked from Clear Lake to Humboldt County and were en route to Oregon.

James and Lewis were transients.

According to sheriff's officials, King said James and Lewis threatened to kill him and his girlfriend.
