KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii — The newly reopened Kulani Correctional Facility on Hawaii's Big Island has received its first group of inmates.
West Hawaii Today (http://is.gd/lXMr9t) reports that 21 inmates have arrived at the renovated facility.
The minimum-security prison was closed in 2009 because of budget restraints. It reopened July 1.
The state Department of Public Safety says there are 56 staffers at the facility.
Sixteen new corrections officers in training will begin their jobs upon their August graduation. Officials say another 19 positions are in various stages of recruitment.
