MUNICH — Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge says midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger is nursing a knee injury and is not expected to return any time soon.
Rummenigge says it's not a matter of "one, two weeks," although he expressed hope that Schweinsteiger's injury will not become a long-term absence.
Schweinsteiger has a painful tendon in his left knee and will not be available for the Bundesliga start on Friday against Wolfsburg. Rummenigge says Schweinsteiger will also miss Germany's friendly against Argentina on Sept. 3 and the beginning of European Championship qualifying against Scotland four days later.
Schweinsteiger was one of the key players in Germany's 1-0 victory over Argentina in the World Cup final, although there had been doubts about his fitness early in the tournament.
He had two ankle surgeries last season.
