RICHMOND, Virginia — Virginia's craft breweries are gaining national recognition after winning several awards at a national competition.

The awards were part of the festivities at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver. The event is presented by the Brewers Association, the trade group for the majority of U.S. brewing companies.

Officials say more than 220 judges evaluated 5,500 beers and awarded 268 medals at the competition in 90 different categories.

Virginia breweries took home seven awards for their beers.

Hardywood Park Craft Brewery in Richmond, Devils Backbone Brewing Co. in Nelson County, Three Notch'd Brewing Co. in Charlottesville and Capitol City Brewing Co. in Arlington were among the winners from Virginia.

Devils Backbone Brewing also received recognition as the Mid-Size Brewing Company and Mid-Size Brewing Company Brewer of the Year.
