JACKSON, Wyoming — Jackson Hole hunters can get free bear spray from a local foundation and the Wyoming Game and Fish Department.

Cory Hatch is executive director of the Jackson Hole Wildlife Foundation. He says the canisters are available free on a first-come, first-served basis. They usually sell for about $40.

The Jackson Hole News&Guide reports (http://bit.ly/1o7MA4C ) that Hatch says researchers have found bear pepper spray is more effective than bullets in stopping bear attacks.

Hatch says the foundation hopes that providing bear spray will keep both hunters and bears safe this hunting season. Some bears are killed every hunting season by hunters out looking for elk or other game.

The giveaway is being funded in part by a grant from the Community Foundation of Jackson Hole.
