MINNEAPOLIS — Prosecutors say a Brooklyn Park man will spend the maximum 40 years in prison after pleading guilty to killing his young son more than a year ago.

The Hennepin County Attorney's office says 24-year-old Reggie Harper pleaded guilty Friday to second-degree intentional murder. The St. Paul Pioneer Press (http://bit.ly/1ZubaZJ ) reports in exchange, prosecutors dropped a charge of first-degree murder.

Harper admitted assaulting his 23-month-old son, Kazerion Harper, in December 2014 because the boy was making noise.

According to the complaint, the boy was crying and Harper would not allow the mother to tend to him. Instead, the complaint says Harper put the boy on the floor and punched him repeatedly. The boy was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Because of aggravating circumstances, the judge was able to increase the sentence to the maximum allowed.
