ANKARA, Turkey — A bomb exploded near a police checkpoint at a Turkish town near the border with Syria on Friday, injuring at least two people, officials said.

The state-run Anadolu Agency quoted the region's governor, Izzettin Kucuk, as saying the bomb was placed in a garbage container near the checkpoint at the entrance of the town of Suruc. A policeman and a civilian were injured, he said.

However, an official from the governor's office contacted by The Associated Press said the explosion was caused by a parked car. Video footage of the scene showed a destroyed white car. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to journalists.

Suruc lies opposite the Syrian town of Kobani where Kurdish forces last month pushed out Islamic State fighters after months of fierce fighting.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.
