GULFPORT, Mississippi — Prosecutors say a 27-year-old man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for manslaughter and an extra five years for committing a felony with a gun when he killed an unarmed bystander outside a nightclub in 2013.

The Sun Herald reports ( ) Aaron Lamar Fields pleaded guilty Monday in Harrison County Circuit Court, admitting he shot 25-year-old Xavier Monroe in the parking lot of Club Eclipse on July 7, 2013.

Judge Roger Clark gave Fields the maximum penalty for manslaughter and added the five years under a state law that allows for enhanced penalties when a firearm is used to commit a felony.

District Attorney Joel Smith said the judge ordered the prison terms to run consecutively for a total of 25 years to serve.
