OT gamble fails as Yankton holds on for 21-20 win over Pierre in 11AA title game


VERMILLION, South Dakota — Sheldon Gant's 1-yard run on fourth down and Cameron Krecji's point after touchdown attempt in overtime was the difference as Yankton held on to beat Pierre TF Riggs 21-20 in Friday's state 11AA title game.

Pierre (9-3) rallied from 14 points down at half to force overtime. Brevin Kaiser scored on a 9-yard run and the Governors opted to go for two points.

Peter Sanchez briefly had Kaiser's pass in the end zone but dropped it on the way to the ground.

Tanner Frick ran for 97 yards and a TD for Yankton (9-3). Quarterback Nate Stephenson ran for a TD and completed 12 of 21 passes for 149 yards.

Kaiser was 13-for-26 for 199 yards and completed a TD pass to Derek Schreiner. He also ran for two scores.
