TUPPER LAKE, New York — The state comptroller's office says the former treasurer of the Tupper Lake Volunteer Fire Department has been charged with stealing up to $20,000 from the department for his own personal expenses.

Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli says 53-year-old Timothy Brown of Tupper Lake was arrested on Monday and charged with grand larceny. He was sent to Franklin County Jail on $5,000 bail.

DiNapoli says Brown used the money for family trips, a birthday celebration and other personal luxuries.

Brown is a 30-year department veteran and treasurer for the last eight years.

DiNapoli said his office is completing an audit of the missing funds and what it called a lack of oversight at the fire department.
