MADISON, Wisconsin — Wisconsin's newly created county deer councils are set to release their first recommendations on local herd sizes next month.

Forming the councils was a key part of recommendations Texas researcher James Kroll came up with in 2012 to help the Department of Natural Resources improve deer management.

The councils are scheduled to release their preliminary recommendations for a three-year deer population objective for each county. Recommendations can include increasing the herd, decreasing it or keeping it stable.

The public will get a chance to comment on the recommendations until Dec. 5. The councils will then finalize their recommendations.

The DNR's board is expected to consider the recommendations in February.
