RACINE, Wisconsin — A Kenosha woman has been ordered to register as a sex offender after being convicted of sexual assault of an inmate at the prison where she worked.

The Journal Times of Racine reports (http://bit.ly/1l3iA27 ) 41-year-old Karina Herrera and a co-worker were accused of smuggling a cellphone to an inmate at Racine Correctional Institution and performing sex acts on him. Herrera pleaded guilty last month to second-degree sexual assault by correctional staff.

Assistant District Attorney Robert Repischak says Herrera's behavior created a security risk and she should serve prison time.

But Racine County Circuit Court Judge Charles Constantine says probation and registration as a sex offender is appropriate punishment. He says Herrera has no prior criminal record and lost her job after her arrest.

Herrera says she regrets what she did.
