MIDDLETOWN, Delaware — New Castle County police say an officer suffered minor injuries after his cruiser ran off Delaware Route 1 and hit a guardrail.

The crash occurred shortly after 4 a.m., just south of the Middletown exit. Police say the officer's car ran off the left side of the highway. After hitting the guardrail, it turned around and stopped, facing north in the southbound lanes.

The officer was taken by ambulance to a hospital. The road was temporarily closed. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
