Hartford police searching for missing mother of 4-year-old found wandering the streets

HARTFORD, Connecticut — Hartford police are searching for a missing woman after a 4-year-old was found wandering the streets on Monday.

Police say a motorist found Shafyalya Nicks walking alone.

Police say the little girl lived nearby, but when they went to her apartment, nobody was home.

Deputy Chief Brian Foley says records show that 22-year-old Shi'day Nicks lives in the apartment and police believe she is the girl's mother or a close relative.

He says Shi'Day Nicks recently moved into the building and is not well known to her neighbors. She previously lived in Springfield, Massachusetts, and Meridian, Mississippi.

Foley says authorities also are looking to contact any other family that 4-year-old Shafyalya may have.

The little girl is currently in the custody of the state Department of Children and Families.
