DETROIT — A motorist has died after being struck by another vehicle while running across a Detroit freeway following a struggle with a state trooper.
The man was hit about 5:50 a.m. Thursday on westbound Interstate 96 on the city's northwest side.
State police say the trooper responded to a report of a vehicle stopped on the freeway and found the driver disoriented and smelling of intoxicants.
Police say the driver got out of the vehicle and became combative as the trooper tried to keep him out of the way of traffic. Police say the trooper used a stun gun to try to subdue the driver, but it had no effect.
Police say he later died at an area hospital. The trooper and the driver of the other vehicle weren't injured.
