GLENDALE, Arizona — Authorities have released the name of a theft suspect who was shot and wounded by a Glendale police officer.

Police say 23-year-old Anthony Tyrone Baker, of Glendale, was chased by officers Monday night. That was after other people reported seeing the man with items that they believed were stolen from an apartment.

Police say Baker ran into a field near the apartment complex and an officer found him hiding in an irrigation ditch.

The officer reported that the man then jumped up and turned toward him while holding something in his hand.

Police say the officer feared for his life and shot the suspect once. Baker was taken to a hospital treatment of injuries described as non-life threatening.

Police say a cellphone was located next to Baker after the shooting.
