PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island — Providence police say they charged a Smithfield man in connection with a shooting near Providence College, after running him down in a foot chase.

Authorities say 37-year-old Willie Washington is charged with felony assault and is detained pending an appearance in District Court. It's not clear if Washington has a lawyer.

City officers responded to reports of shots fired on Huxley Avenue near Providence College at about 1 a.m. Saturday. They say 29-year-old Rudy Vasquez of Providence was shot in the arm and taken to Rhode Island Hospital.

Police say Vasquez told them he got into an argument with people in an SUV and one of them got out and opened fire on him.

Police say Vasquez gave them a description of the SUV, and officers later found Washington.
