RALEIGH, North Carolina — The state Transportation Department has awarded contracts for two maintenance projects on the Bonner Bridge over the Oregon Inlet.

DOT officials said in a news release Wednesday that the work on both projects will begin early next and is scheduled to be completed by mid-June.

A contract of almost $890,000 was awarded to Smith-Rowe LLC of Mount Airy for repairs to the steel crutch bents. A contract of just over $331,000 was awarded to Precon Marine Inc. of Chesapeake, Virginia for repairs to concrete along the underside of the bridge deck.

The bridge is the only span connecting the mainland to Hatteras Island and was designed to last 30 years when built in 1963. The state and environmentalists are trying to settle a dispute over a replacement for the bridge.
