Maui moped driver dies after crash with SUV; fatality is island's fifth in 2015

WAILUKU, Hawaii — A 25-year-old Maui man driving a moped died Saturday in a crash with a small sport utility vehicle.

Maui police say Davin K. Ah Yen of Kahului died in the crash just before 7:30 a.m. at South Papa Avenue near Maalo Street.

Police say a 23-year-old man driving a Honda CR-V was heading north and made a left turn into a home driveway.

Yen was traveling south and crashed into the SUV.

He was critically injured and rushed to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he died.

The SUV driver was not injured. He was wearing a seat belt and the SUV's side air bags deployed.

Ah Yen was not wearing a helmet.

The fatality was Maui County's fifth this year. Last year the county had 14 fatalities by June 20.
