SALEM, Massachusetts — A grand jury has indicted a man charged with killing his girlfriend in her Marblehead home just days before Christmas.
John Devine was indicted Wednesday on a first-degree murder charge in connection with the Dec. 21 slaying of 51-year-old Tanya Nichols.
The 28-year-old Devine has been held without bail since pleading not guilty at his district court arraignment on Dec. 22.
No Superior Court arraignment date has been scheduled.
Witnesses said the victim and Devine were often seen and heard arguing.
Devine's attorney says authorities have presented no evidence connecting Devine to Nichols' death than placing him at the scene along with several other people.
Nichols was a former dancer with the Boston Ballet who ran more recently ran a jewelry business.
