MUNCIE, Indiana — Ball State University's board of trustees chairman says the resignation without explanation of the school's president after less than 18 months on the job was voluntary and the reason more information isn't being disclosed is to protect privacy.

Rick Hall said before a board meeting Friday that there is no scandal, no financial crisis and "no other shoe that's going to drop." He says like with all personnel decisions, there is a desire to protect the privacy of those involved.

The (Muncie) Star Press reports (http://tspne.ws/20dK4vH ) associate professor Amy Harden, who chairs the University Senate, told Hall during a committee meeting earlier Friday there was "unease" among faculty because the resignation of Paul Ferguson was shrouded in secrecy.

Ball State announced Monday that Ferguson had resigned.
