HINESBURG, Vermont — Police say a 17-year-old driver and a bicyclist were killed in a collision in Hinesburg, Vermont.

The car driver was identified Sunday as Joseph Marshall of Hinesburg, a senior at Champlain Valley Union High School. The bicyclist was identified as 47-year-old Richard Tom of Hinesburg.

Police said both were traveling south on Vermont 116 when Marshall lost control of the car at a curve in the road. He then went onto the shoulder, striking Tom. Both went down an embankment where the car struck a tree and the driver was ejected.

Both victims were declared dead at the scene of the crash.

Police believe excessive speed caused the crash.
